Open Day Season 2023

It’s been a fairly busy season so far. The weather hasn’t always been great, with heavy rain and chilly wind on two open days. We have still been open and receiving hardy visitors on every occasion. Had a busy day yesterday as our neighbours at Beacon Hill Fort were holding a Napoleonic event along with nearby Harwich Redoubt. Both days witnessed French and English reenactors attacking and defending the fort along with cannon and musket fire. Great to watch but very loud. We received several positive comments in our visitors book too, which is always welcomed.

Glen + Jack – So important to see history preserved Really interesting well done to you all!

Dez family – Great place with fascinating facts

T Potter – A great improvement on when I first saw this. The amount of info…..along with artifacts [sic] have made it a ‘go to’ for a part of war time history of Harwich

Adrian – History very well preserved! Wonderful atmosphere

A Miller – Great to see it so well kept

G Leonard – Great piece of history Very good

It’s comments like those above that make the effort worth while. We have a few ideas for new exhibits, some of which will be worked on during the winter and installed for next year. We have also received a couple of items from Coalhouse Fort, East Tilbury, following it’s closure in 2020. Our next open day will be Sunday 3rd September between 11am and 3pm. Admission is still free but donations are always welcome 🙂

Open Days 2023

The new open day season is nearly upon us. Starting on Sunday 2nd April 2023, we will be opening the tower between 11am and 3pm on alternate Sundays until the end of October.

We had a successful year in 2022 with 699 visitors, including a couple of group visits, so we hope to improve on that this year. We also collected almost £300 towards the upkeep of this historic and possibly unique building. Harwich RDF Tower is believed to be the only WWII Radar installation to still have its original array in situ.

Entry to the tower is free, but donations are always welcome. Children are encouraged to come along too, although under 16’s will need to be accompanied by an adult. Hope to see you there 🙂

Very wet Sunday: 29th May

A big thank you to all those who braved the weather this weekend and came to visit us at the Radar Tower. With four huge downpours between 11am and 3pm we were amazed that we had 38 guests. Some interesting questions and positive feedback.

Sarah S: Excellent-V. Detailed History of The Site

Yates Family: Very Interesting

Claire C: Surprising place, so much bigger than I imagined. Wonderfully restored

Once again we are looking forward to our nest open day on Sunday 12th June between 11am and 3pm. Hopefully it will be a bit drier 🙂
